Splatter Cinema opens the door to Lucio Fulci’s THE BEYOND (1981) at the Plaza Theatre at 9:30 p.m. Read Philip Nutman’s Retro Review of this over-the-top cult classic here. Legendary Jamaican ska band Toots & the Maytals groove at The Masquerade.  Jane’s Addiction rocks The TabernacleDavina & the Vagabonds bring a fresh spin to jazz swing at Smith’s Olde Bar with Brighter Than A Thousand Suns and Dan Coyle. During Darkland County Tuesdays at Eddie’s Attic, hear artists from the Stephen King/John Mellencamp production preview its music leading up to the premiere of GHOST BROTHERS OF DARKLAND COUNTY at the Alliance Theatre on April 4. Grab your horn and head to Twain’s in Decatur for a Joe Gransden jazz jam session starting at 9 p.m. Burning Time rock the blues at Fat Matt’s Rib Shack. Dance the night away at Tues. Retro in the Metro nights at Midtown’s Deadwood Saloon featuring video mixes of ’80s, ’90s and 2Ks hits.

“Spacey, spooky and stripped-down…their songs bring to mind the freakish contents of Victorian curiosity cabinets and would make for a great soundtrack to the most adorable little taxidermy shop you’ve ever seen,” writes Garrett Weindorf (Urban Tulsa Weekly). With a quote like that, we’re kind of intrigued by Daymoths in a Really Retro and totally now way. They’re playing Drunken Unicorn tonight with the Memes and Pink Pompeii, who are one of those bands who can rock a cello. Big Mike’s off in Seattle till June performing with El Vez in Teatro ZinZanni’s CALIENTE SHOW, so Atlanta Funk Society’s Jonathan Lloyd will be filling in on vocals. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs BOND AND BEYOND— a spy-themed program featuring a variety of James Bond themes in addition to classic songs from other spy films —  tonight and Saturday night at 8 p.m., in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. Another weekend, another con rolls into Atlanta. This time, it’s Japanese anime/comics/costume fest MomoCon at the Marriott Marquis. The Plaza Theatre kicks off a week-run of VIGILANTE VIGILANTE (2011), a documentary about  a new breed of crime-fighter – the anti-graffiti vigilante.  These dedicated blight-warriors stop at nothing to rid their neighborhoods and cities of street art,

stickers, tags, and posters. The 7:30 sceening will include a panel discussion with director Max Good, producer Nate Wollman, and Atlanta street artists Hense and Michi Meko! The After School Special edition of Contraband Cinema features 16mm films rescued from the past, as well as advice on smoking, driving, dating and proper female hygiene; a short review on the new book Learning With The Lights Off, and a brand new film by Christopher Childs and Krista Strobel on the role of film archives today.  Come to the Ponce de Leon Library branch at 7:30pm for films, pre-school snacks, pop quizzes, book discounts and prizes! It’s another rockin’ night at Star Bar with a great line-up including The El Caminos; Jade Lemons & The Crimson Lust; The F’n Heartbreaks (featuring Kool Kat Brook Bolen); and Little 5 Points Rockstar OrchestraColin Hay, the former lead singer of Australian hit ’80s band Men At Work, rocks solo at Variety Playhouse. Melding brass with banjo, guitar, bass and drums, eclectic Greensboro, N.C. quintet Holy Ghost Temple Revival is at The Earl with Abby Wren & What It Is. Fat Back Deluxe blues it down at Fat Matts Rib Shack. The Last Waltz Ensemble channel The Band at Smith’s Olde Bar. Spice things up with sassy Latin rhythms including Salsa, Merengue, Cha-Cha-Cha, and Bachata during Salsa Night with Salsambo Dance Studio at Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s Martinis and IMAX. In the spirit of St. Paddy’s Day, Cineprov! makes green jest of LEPRECHAUN IN THE HOOD (2000) at Relapse Theatre. Stoney Brooks brings on the blues at Northside Tavern.

Saturday, March 17 St. Patrick’s Day

The Star Bar  throws an all-day St. Pat’s Day Party starting at 1 p.m., live music by Andrew and the Disapyramids (featuring Kool Kat Joshua Longino) and Fishhawk starts at 10 p.m. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day Texarcana style with Burt and the Bandits, everybody’s favorite SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT tribute band featuring Kool Kats Jon Waterhouseand Barb Hays, at House of the Rock, 731 Peachtree St. Facebook event page here. Hot Rod Walt and the Psycho-Devilles rockabilly it St. Paddy’s style at Irish Bred in Douglasville. Little G. Weevil brings on the St. Paddy’s blues at Darwin’s Blues and Burgers. Spanish Harlem Orchestra jazzes up The Rialto. Soul Rebels Brass Band plays Smith’s Olde Bar.

For those more into Japanese anime than Irish green beer, MomoCon continues downtown at the Marriott Marquis. The Atlanta Rollergirls  have their second bout of the season, as always, at the Yaarab Shrine Temple. At 5 p.m., the recently-victorious Denim Demons battling the ladies in green, the Toxic Shocks. Will the luck of the Irish be with the Shocks? Or will the Demons’ winning momentum prove to be unstoppable? Then, stay put for bout two at 7:30 p.m., when the Rumble Bs take on Gainesville’s Roller Rebels. The Bs have a whole new roster and and have been practicing harder than ever. Will they send the Roller Rebels packing and win?  The High Museum of Art continues its MOMA movie series with showings of a 35 mm print of FOLLOW THE FLEET (1936), the fifth on-screen pairing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, collected by the New York museum at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. And as usual, DJ Romeo Cologne transforms the sensationally seedy Clermont Lounge into a ’70s disco/funk inferno late into the wee hours.

Rise and dine with Chicken & Pigs at 1 p.m. dunch at The Earl. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band rock Philips ArenaGwen Hughes joins The Trio to jazz up The Family Dog. Tony Bryant brings on the blues at Fat Matt’s, and Uncle Sugar blues it down at Northside Tavern.

7 Stages presents the world premiere of THE HIDDEN MAN, based on the true story of Robert Sherer and his mentor, Rev. Howard Finster. The unexpected and controversial story chronicles a young artist who arrives in 1980s Atlanta knowing three things for certain: he’s gay, he’s an atheist and he is destined to kill himself. Howard, a religious conservative preacher, created Paradise Garden in North Georgia, a folk art garden with messages from the Lord. Broadway musical BILLY ELLIOTT, based on the movie about the motherless boy who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes with music by Elton John,  plays the Fabulous Fox Theatre this week through Sun. March 18.

DragonCon is still months away, but get your con fix now as the giant nerds of Dad’s Garage explores the eccentric and outlandish realm of sci‐fi fandom in THE WRATH OF CON. Get ready for blaster battles, ridiculous costumes and celebrity sightings all rolled into one night of comedy! Through March 17.

MANDALA: SACRED CIRCLE IN TIBETAN BUDDHISM brings peace and harmony to the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University. This amazing special exhibition explores Buddhism’s unique and beautiful perspective on sacred space and honor that through the tradition of mandalas. This weekend-long event takes its name from two things the south loves (sexy ladies and Southern hospitality) and kicks off tonight with the Just Hatched Showcase, featuring acts by new-to-the-craft starlets-to-be.  Then at 9 p.m. Burlesque Legend Satan’s Angel takes the stage for “Have Tassels Will Travel, a One-Woman Improvisational play about the life and times of the star nicknamed “The Devils Own Mistress,” the Queen and originator of fire tassel twirling. Friday, March 9

Southern Fried Burlesque Fest continues with a day full of classes and workshops, vendors, and The Free Range Burlesque International Showcase (doors at 8 p.m.; show at 9 p.m.). Last year’s Friday night show was one of the best burlesque shows ever in this city featuring performances by some of the biggest regional and national performers in the business. Taking the stage will be burlesque legends Satan’s Angel, Shannon Doah and Gabriella Maze (watch for an interview with Shannon Doah soon, and if you missed our feature on Gabriella, catch up on your reading here), as well as revival stars Kitten DeVille from California (read our exclusive Kool Kat interview with her here); Perle Noire, the Black Pearl; and more!

Days of the Dead officially commences today at the Wyndham Peachtree City Conference Center. Starting at 5 PM, Atlanta’s first-ever all-horror media convention kicks off in a big way, with an evening filled to capacity with movies, cosplayers, screams and stars. See this year’s Oscar-winning Best Picture THE ARTIST in a venue worthy of its vintage glory, the Fabulous Fox Theatre, which opened in 1929 just at the cusp of silents to talkies. For fans of one of the most famous rock bands of all time, the Pink Floyd Experience revives the sound of the famous band in all its glory on stage at the Variety Playhouse. Hot Rod Walt (of Hot Rod Walt and the Psycho-Devilles) plays a rare solo acoustic show at The Grove in Locust Grove. Blair Crimmins and the Hookers return the Ragtime to the Strand Theatre. The Star Bar gets honky-tonky with the Bareknuckle Betties (Vocalist Julea Thomerson is a Kool Kat), The Defibulators, Rolling Nowhere and DJ Speedtrap.  The Hollidays bring some soul to the Northside Tavern. Electromatics serve up a classy combo of Chicago/west coast Blues, blue-eyed soul and an essence of standard jazz and Sinatra at Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s Martinis and IMAX. Cineprov! goes to the dogs with werewolf cult classic THE HOWLING at Relapse Theatre. All proceeds from tonights show go to German Shepherd Rescue of GA with a silent Auction and actual German shepherds to play with, too!

Saturday, March 10

Saturday is the big day at the Southern Fried Burlesque Fest with performers competing for the second crown in the Southern Fried Burlesque Pageant at 8 p.m., including a farewell performance by last year’s winner and reigning queen Siren Santina. Then at 11 p.m., stay up late for the Southern Scorcher Showcase, starring some of the best performers was across the Southeast, including aerialist extraordinaire Sadie Hawkins of Blast-Off Burlesque and headlined by Atlanta native, the Lady Ms. Vagina Jenkins!

Days of the Dead also has its big days with Q&As with the stars; movie screenings including DEAR GOD NO! (If you don’t know this homegrown Bikers and Bigfoot exploitation movie, read our interview with director Jimmy Bickert here), Hell on Wheels Hearse Show and contest, a special edition of the Silver Scream Spookshow, costume contest and more. Autographs will be signed, costumes will be worn and screams will be screamed.

Fear and Loathing in ATL, an art show inspired by Hunter S. Thompson‘s iconic work, opens tonight at ABV, featuring Kool Kat Chris Hamer and other Atlanta artists. The Star Bar punks out with the X-Impossibles, Catfight, Kentucky Bridgeburners and horror salsa Misfits cover band Los Meesfits. Northside Tavern goes back in time to the days of Motown thanks to Ike Stubblefield. Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray and The Shadowboxers play Variety Playhouse. The High Museum of Art continues its MOMA movie series with showings of a 35 mm print of BONJOUR TRISTESSE (1958) collected by the New York museum at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. And as usual, DJ Romeo Cologne transforms the sensationally seedy Clermont Lounge into a ’70s disco/funk inferno late into the wee hours.

Sunday, March 11

The weekend comes to a close as both the Southern Fried Burlesque Fest and Days of the Dead wrap up the festivities. The former ends with a Legends panel at 1 p.m., with headliner Kitten DeVille and classic stars Satan’s Angel and Shannon Doah. Days of the Dead moves onto the afterlife with several more film showings, panels and a Zombie Best in Show contest. The Masquerade hosts Rock Out Hunger, a fundraiser featuring performances by Starbolt9, The Sexual Side Effects, Last Five Standing and the Kimberly Sutton Band. The event begins at 2 p.m. and live music starts at 4 p.m. with special guests Saturday Night Beaver presenting a glamorous stage show that celebrates the artists that brought sex appeal to popular music such as Rick James, Rod Stewart and George Michael. Then U2 tribute band Uno Dos Tres Catorce performs followed by two sets by Yacht Rock Revue. THE GOLDEN TICKET

The Legendary Shack*Shakers rock The Earl. Named after a metaphor for musical freedom, Montana Skies delve into a variety of classic music from Pink Floyd to Rush to Vivaldi, as well as their own originals, in the vintage setting of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. The High Museum of Art continues its MOMA movie series with showings of a 35 mm print of George Cukor’s IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU (1954) collected by the New York museum at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The Atlanta Opera opens THE GOLDEN TICKET, based on Roald Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. And as usual, DJ Romeo Cologne transforms the sensationally seedy Clermont Lounge into a ’70s disco/funk inferno late into the wee hours.

Friday night features a Burlesque at the End of the World show produced by the fabulous Talloolah Love at midnight, panels, dealers’ room and performances by a laundry list of steampunk bands, such as The Hellblinki Sextet, Aeronauts, Carnival Epsilon, DJ Dr. Q, and more. Kool Kat Andy Ditzler‘s latest Film Love: George Kuchar celebrates the life and productions of the late filmmaker. Hoop Essence presents a special screening of the documentary film THE HOOPING LIFE, a documentary about changing the world through the use of nothing but a hula-hoop, along with a fun line-up of live hoop dance performances, at 7 Stages. Raised on a music diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff by famous dad Westerns author Larry (LONESOME DOVE)James McMurtry brings his fierce lyrics, along with Johnny Burke, to the Variety Playhouse. The Masquerade gets back in black with an AC/DC Tribute tonight, featuring Back N Black and Steppheavy.  The Highlander gets rocked hard by Iron Whip, Beitthemeans and Dusty Booze and the Baby Haters. Burning Time lights the stage at Fat Matt’s. The Salsambo Dance Studio jazzes up Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s Martinis and IMAX for Salsa Night. That’s why we’re thrilled to see Stevie Tombstone playing live again at Trackside Tavern with Walk from the Gallows and Muleskinner Macqueen. Van Dyke Parks and eclectic alternative musician Jeffrey Butzer (Read our ‘Tis the Season piece on Jeffrey’s A Charlie Brown Christmas here) fire up The Earl. The Highlander hosts the most rocking event of the evening, featuring Hip to Death, Swank Sinatra and Mack Messiah. The legendary Delbert McClinton plays Variety Playhouse.The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes special guest star Bernadette Peters. The Park Tavern hosts a diverse star-studded show, with performances from The Breeze Kings, The Squirrelheads, Half Dozen Brass Band, Ian Schumacher and Ryan Hickey & the Saints. Whiskey Please throws one back at The Family Dog. For those looking for some more rip-roarin’, liquor-inspired honkytonk fun, head over to the Star Bar for I Want Whisky, Caroline and the Ramblers and more. Burlesque shows for charity, of course! The Syrens of the South present the Vixens Valentease Burlesque Show, a Valentine’s Burlesque event at Five Spot featuring many of Atlanta’s best-known performers including Katherine Lashe, Ruby Redmayne and magician Chad Sanborn and supporting a can drive for charity. Catch up on an ATLRetro feature about Chad here. Alternative rockers They Might Be Giants serve up some mighty rock with Jonathan Coulton at the Variety Playhouse. Pop rockers Fountains of Wayne, popularized by their smash hit “Stacey’s Mom,” rock The Loft, along with the rocking vehicle of Kool Kat Drew Beskin, the District Attorneys. For those in the mode for some jazzy stylings, The Strand Theatre holds both an afternoon and a special night chockfull of jazz performances sure to please even the most diehard fan. Performers include the Harrison High School Band in both shows and saxophonist Umcolisi Terrell and the Kennesaw State University Jazz Combo at night. The soulful Soulphonics & Ruby Velle leave an impression on The Earl, complimented by funky Cherry Royale. In support of the PushPush Theatre, Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues Band headlines a special benefit concert at the Decatur theatre, complete with dinner, music and good times. In honor of the release of their new CD, neo-glam alt rockers The Sexual Side Effects (of course, led by vivacious Kool Kat Amber Taylor) are throwing a big Valentine’s jam at the Masquerade! No real party would be complete without go-go dancers and DJs operating the tables, two things this party is going to have in spades. Or, in this case, hearts! For a smoother, more soulful evening, the Rialto Center at Georgia State University hosts Johnny Mercer & Friends, a show celebrating the jazz icon complete with Atlanta’s own jazz icons Joe Gransden and Maria Howell, accompanied by the GSU Jazz Band. Famous church-turned-concert-venue the Tabernacle plays house to the Yonder Mountain String Band and the Infamous Stringdusters. For more Valentine’s fun, head up to the Strand in Marietta, for a special Valentine’s presentation of the romantic Cary Grant classic, AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957). Looking to go way back in time? Early-music ensemble Lauda Musicam presents “A Valentine’s Day Celebration: Love Music of the Renaissance,” featuring period-authentic instruments only. Watch for a Really Retro feature on this historically creative group soon. Frankie’s Blues Mission gives Darwin’s Burgers and Blues some of its trademark blues.

Monster-loving artist (and Kool Kat) Chris Hamer unveils some new works at Rev Coffee. The Earl is home to quite the southern show, featuring the talents of The Whiskey Gentry, Have Gun Will Travel and Damion Suomi and the Minor Prophets. For more down-home, southern-style flavor, Smith’s Olde Bar showcases the John King Band, Joanna Duff, Trey Broussard and 1880s Dance Party. Film buffs will appreciate the High Museum of Art’s contribution to the weekend, as they are serving up a special showing of NEVER FEAR (THE YOUNG LOVERS). Directed by Ida Lupino and the only Hollywood feature directed by a woman with a 35mm collected by New York’s MOMA, this ’50s classic centers on a young dancer struggling with polio and love. And as usual, DJ Romeo Cologne transforms the sensationally seedy Clermont Lounge into a ’70s disco/funk inferno late into the wee hours.

Confirmed groups include The Cogburns; Superpill; Junior, Dolan and Cash; Red Rocket Deluxe: Downer Brothers: Sonoramic Commando: Drop Dead Nasty; Grim Rooster; The Suicide Doors; Caroline & the Ramblers; Whiskey Belt; and Rockbridge Heights.

Mon Cherie Presents the latest in her Va-Va-Voom burlesque show series, “My Gal is Red Hot” at The Shelter. It’s hard to believe that innovative indie singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco has been performing for 20 years. She’ll be bringing her alt-folk to Variety Playhouse with genre-bending Pearl and the Beard opening. Atlanta singer-songrwriter Michelle Malone performs at Peachtree Tavern. Innovative Texas songwriter/musician Darden Smith headlines Eddie’s AtticCineProv launches a MST3K type B-movie series with the Vincent Price classic HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL at 8 p.m. at Relapse Comedy Theatre. Contemporary jazz and R&B band Epitome swings into Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s Martinis and IMAX.

Saturday, February 4

The art-deco historic Plaza Theatre presents yet another unique night at the movies at 10 p.m. when local ragtime heroes Blair Crimmins & the Hookers provide a live soundtrack to OLD MAN CABBAGE, a silent movie about two runaways who join a ghostly circus that appears inside a 1920s speakeasy. The film, an example of a new long-form narrative music video, is a collaboration between Ninja Puppet Productions and also features the magnificent Imperial OPA Circus performers. The band will present a full set concert after the screening. And yeah we think this’ll be cool that Blair is our Kool Kat of the Week!

The High Museum of Art also presents a special cinematic program, A MOMA Treasury of Short Films, at 2 p.m. in the Rich Theatre. The six rare shorts include THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (1903); NEWMAN LAUGH-O-GRAMS (1921), produced by an young Walt Disney; ORCHARD STREET, directed by Ken Jacobs; and more.

One of the heavy-hitters on the rock scene of the ‘80s and ‘90s, Widespread Panic begins a three-night run at the Tabernacle. For a night full of adult fun, the Masquerade is home to yet another one of the infamous Mon Cherie shows. Mon Cherie’s Rockabilly Lounge will be a night full of Burlesque, pin-up girls and rockabilly band Hard Luck & Trouble, what some would consider the holy trinity of happiness. And of course, Rev. Andy spins Psychobilly Freakout. For a bit more active fun, Fernbank Museum’s Martinis and IMAX throws a special Swing Dance Night, complete with music from the acoustic swing group the Bonaventure Quartet, featuring chanteuse extraordinaire Amy Pike. Connor Christian & Southern Gothic serve up their heartfelt Americana music at The Earl. Smith’s Olde Bar holds a rocktastic show, featuring the talents of The Dirty Guv’nahs, The District Attorneys (including recent Kool Kat Drew Beskin) and The Longshot Saints.

Saturday, January 28

To honor the late Cabbagetown poet Deacon Lunchbox, the Plaza Theatre throws a special memorial show, The Love that Won’t Shut Up Memorial Show, featuring screenings of indie docs BENJAMIN SMOKE by Jem Cohen/Pete Sillen and LAWRENCE OF LAWRENCEVILLE HIGHWAY by Neil Fried and musical performances by some of Atlanta’s best Retro-inspired and Redneck Underground musicians, the incomparable Kelly Hogan, Smoke That City, Debbey Richardson, Slim Chance and many others. And we can only imagine the Deacon Lunchbox set by Jim Stacy. Watch out for a special posthumous Kool Kat on Deacon Lunchbox soon.

Soulful/roots singer/songwriter Edwin McCain, joined by Erick Baker, play at the Red Clay Theatre in Duluth. Widespread Panic continues to dominate the Tabernacle. Citing such great rock acts as influences as Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead, Turtle Folk’s show at Smith’s Olde Bar is sure to be one for a variety of ages. Folk singer/songwriter Eric Taylor brings his lyrical and guitar prowess to Eddie’s Attic. Darwin’s Burgers & Blues gets rocked by the soulful southern style of The Hollidays. Another Led Zeppelin tribute band graces the ATL, this time in the form of Zoso. Julea Thomerson of the BareKnuckle Betties and an ATLRetro Kool Kat and friend/mentor Danny “Mudcat” Dudeck play the blues together at Northside Tavern in a special show tonight. And as usual, DJ Romeo Cologne transforms the sensationally seedy Clermont Lounge into a ’70s disco/funk inferno late into the wee hours.

The first film in Marietta’s Strand Theatre silent movie series, SPARROWS, starring 1920s sweetheart Mary Pickford, will get a rare return to the big screen at 3pm with an organ pops pre-show and sing-a-long by Philip Allen, organist of Marietta’s First Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. This is the fourth time Philip has accompanied SPARROWS, and he has developed a great musical score that will definitely ‘tug’ at those heart strings. Catch up on our Kool Kat interview with another of The Strand’s organists, Ron Carter, about the vintage theatre, its Mighty Allen Organ and scoring silent movies hereWidespread Panic continues rocking the Tabernacle for a third and final night. Eddie’s Attic gets treated to the classic rock sounds of The Farewell Drifters. A local production of the comedy about two mismatched, newly-single roommates, Felix the neat freak and Oscar the slob, plays at The Earl Smith Strand Theatre  in Marietta through Jan. 22.

ANNIE, the musical about everyone’s favorite comic-strip red-headed orphan cheering up the Great Depression, plays the Fox Theatre through Jan. 22.

CAVALIA: ODYSSEO takes the spirit, beauty and creativity of recent European acrobatic spectaculars such as Cirque de Soleil and applies it to horses. Let’s just say this is not your mamma’s  Royal Lippizan Stallions circus show. Big tent at 864 Spring Street. Through Jan. 29.

Explore one of America’s most iconic theaters in AIN’T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING: HOW THE APOLLO THEATER SHAPED AMERICAN ENTERTAINMENT, a special exhibition at the Atlanta History Center . Presented by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, in collaboration with the Apollo Theater Foundation, the display includes historic and contemporary costumes, playbills, music scores, graphic images and recorded music. Through March 4, 2012.

PICASSO TO WARHOL, a special art exhibition at the High Museum of Art, features over 100 works of art from 14 of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Through Apr. 29, 2012.

Monday, January 9

From 3 PM on, savor tropical sounds and libations, as well as a Polynesian dinner, during Mai Tai Monday at Smith’s Olde BarNorthside Tavern hosts its weekly Blues Jam. To break up the Monday monotony, head over to Fat Matt’s Rib Shack for dinner and a show, with local blues/jazz band Dry White Toast performing at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, January 10

In the mood for a veritable gore-fest? Then Plaza Theatre has the film for you! In honor of everybody’s least favorite upcoming holiday, Splatter Cinema presents the film that most launched the splatter horror subgenre, Friday the 13th, in all its gory glory at 9:30 p.m.! Grab your horn and head to Twain’s in Decatur for a Joe Gransden jazz jam session starting at 9 p.m. J.T. Speed plays Fat Matt’s Rib ShackNathan Nelson & Entertainment Crackers bring on the blues at Northside Tavern. Catch Tues. Retro in the Metro nights at Midtown’s Deadwood Saloon, featuring video mixes of ’80s, ’90s and 2Ks hits.

Wednesday, January 11

The Atlanta Funk Society turns the main room of Smith’s Olde Bar into the funkiest place in Atlanta Wed. night. Get ready to rumba, cha-cha and jitterbug at the weekly Swing Night at Graveyard TavernThe Hollidays play Fat Matt’s Rib ShackDanny “Mudcat” Dudeck blues it down at Northside Tavern. Dance to ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s hits during Retro in the Metro Wednesdays at Pub 71 in Brookhaven.

Thursday, January 12

As a tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma joins the glee clubs from Morehouse College and Spelman College and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for the 20th anniversary A King Celebration Concert at Atlanta Symphony Hall. The Star Bar features a diverse range of musical talents, such as Lightnin’ Ray & The Mystics, Jeffrey Butzer (for our interview with Jeffrey about his recent A Charlie Brown Christmas show, click here) with Molly Harvey, and Taylor Crowell & The Old Gold. Red Light Cafe holds a special Bluegrass Thursday Band Jam. Relax with a tropical cocktail at vintage tiki bar Trader Vic’s where Tongo Hiti, featuring Big Mike Geier, play Retro-Polynesian luxurious live lounge sounds, as well as trippy takes on iconic pop songs, every Thursday night. Big Mike’s about to head to Seattle for four months, so this’ll be one of his last local gigs for a while. The Breeze Kings and Chickenshack bring on the blues respectively at Northside Tavern and Fat Matt’s Rib Shack.

Friday January 13

To make the unluckiest day of the year just a little bit better, head over to the Star Bar for Friday the 13th, Part 2: Electric Boogaloo, a musical celebration that no amount of black cats or broken mirrors could ruin! Featured bands include Freckle and Burn, The Head and Jade Lemons and the Crimson Lust. Blair Crimmins and The Hookers turn Fernbank Museum’s Martinis and IMAX into a 1920s ragtime jazz club.  Veteran Atlanta musician/beatnik blues poet Kodac Harrison brings his soulful voice to a combo album release, art opening and gig at 7 Stages. The Variety Playhouse hosts Boulder, Colorado’s Big Head Todd and the Monsters, founded in 1986.

Saturday, January 14

MOON and LED ZEPPELIN IV at the Variety Playhouse. THE WHITE REINDEER (1952) won the Fairy Tale Award at the Cannes Film Festival from a jury led by Jean Cocteau and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film before falling into obscurity. The legendary Finnish art/vampire film, however, gets a rare screening tonight at 7:30 at the  Plaza Theatre , co-sponsored by the Scandinavian-American Foundation of Georgia and the Mythic Imagination Institute. Read our Retro Review here. Eddie’s Attic gets bluesy with the sounds of Delta Moon and Linda McRae. Modern Skirts, The District Attorneys and Tedo Stone rock The Earl. Drew Beskin of the DAs is our Kool Kat this week. Kodac Harrison plays a second night at 7 Stages. And as usual, DJ Romeo Cologne transforms the sensationally seedy Clermont Lounge into a ’70s disco/funk inferno late into the wee hours.

Sunday, January 15

Interstate plays The Earl for dunch, while Tab Benoit and The Deacon Brandon Reeves kick it at Smith’s Olde Bar. Fatback Deluxe bring on the blues at Fat Matt’s, and Uncle Sugar blues it down at Northside Tavern.
